In July of 1862 Richmond is the capital of the Confederate States of America. More than that, it is home to the Tredegar Ironworks, one of the few heavy factories that the Confederacy possesses and a vital part of the CSA's war against the North. Three separate men have been found murdered in Richmond: Beauregard Wiggins of the War Department, Will McNeill of Treasury Department and Terrell Cribb, a Virginia enrollment officer. The only thing these three men have in common, other than being connected with the war effort, is that the last place they visited before being murdered was Tredegar. A Maryland artillery officer without a command is assigned to the Provost Guard and ordered to discover who the murderer is. Spies or escaped Yankee prisoners are suspects in the foul deeds but the real answer to the crime will leave the military authorities in Richmond stunned....
