Born in 1431 to the House of Drăculești, a branch of the princely House of Basarab, young Vlad's early years were marked by political turmoil and personal tragedy. Held hostage by the Ottoman Empire alongside his brother Radu, Vlad witnessed firsthand the brutal machinations of power that would later inform his own reign. The psychological impact of his formative years-watching his father's assassination, enduring captivity, and navigating the ruthless world of medieval politics-forged him into a leader whose name would become synonymous with both calculated cruelty and unwavering resolve.
When Vlad ascended to power as Voivode of Wallachia in 1456, he inherited a principality torn by boyar factions and threatened by the expanding Ottoman Empire. His response was swift and merciless. The forests surrounding his castle soon bristled not with trees but with the impaled bodies of his enemies-nobles, political rivals, Ottoman invaders, and common criminals alike. Contemporary accounts describe forests of the dying, where thousands writhed on sharpened stakes in elaborate displays of torment designed to strike terror into the hearts of his enemies and enforce an iron discipline among his subjects.
Yet beneath this horrific brutality lay a complex ruler. To his people, Vlad was also a defender against Ottoman expansion, a champion of Orthodox Christianity, and an administrator who brought order to chaos. Romanian folklore portrays him as stern but just-a leader who protected the common people against the depredations of corrupt nobles and foreign invaders. While Western Europe recoiled in horror at tales of his atrocities, many Romanians have long viewed him as a necessary force who secured their nation's independence in a turbulent era.
But how did a brutal warlord transform into literature's most enduring monster? This book traces the remarkable evolution of Vlad's legacy through the centuries-from Ottoman chronicles that painted him as a savage tyrant, to Russian narratives that portrayed him as an instrument of divine punishment, to Bram Stoker's landmark 1897 novel that immortalized the name Dracula in Western consciousness. Drawing on previously untranslated Romanian sources, Ottoman accounts, and medieval manuscripts, we uncover the complex web of historical circumstance, cultural symbolism, and literary imagination that transformed a historical figure into a supernatural predator.
