CHARCOAL, as medicine and for medicinal purposes, has been highly extolled by men of science in different ages; but it has fallen into almost general disuse, because the charcoal was prepared from improper woods, and in a manner which rendered it useless. Mons. Duval published his Appelaux Midecins sur tEmploi du Charbon, but he at that time found it of little service to call medical attention to it, as they were very slow of hearing. Dr. Brachet, of Paris, wrote on The Uses of Charcoal in Medicine. This Dissertation, says the discriminating Dr. Farr, is remarkable for its exact appreciation of its physical effects upon the human body. In 1830, Messieurs Merat and Deleus published an Universal Dictionary on Medicine and Therapeutics, and assigned a very important place in it to charcoal. Dr. Burns has highly recommended it; but its disuse has originated from the entire inutility of that common article sold by druggists, which is only fit for tooth-powder. The action of the Acacia Charcoal in the stomach and intestines is, in changing, in its passage through the alimentary canal, the gases and noxious fluids, which are the principal causes that generate very many diseases; indigestion and general debility are ever associated with these causes. The extraordinary electric virtues of charcoal enter into the blood, and through it produce the most salutary results upon the entire body. This you may ...
