When is a mutant monster not a monster?
1st Lieutenant Kele-de (Kai) Ann McMahon of the FAC (Free America Civil Militia) learns, much to her shock, that a major secret about some legendary beasts has been hidden from the world for nearly one thousand years. This was deliberately hidden by the Council of Elders, who were entrusted with the volatile secret. The legends about the beasts, known as Howlers, have been told around the Osage hearth fires for generations, and how Kai's ancestors had fought them. However, the stories were only partial truths, because not all of the Howlers died in that epic war.
Now the Howlers are mysteriously vanishing from the safe reservations, where they, and their descendants, have been cared for since the Great War. Will Kai's natural instinct for automatically killing monsters remain, or is there something more to these particular mutants?
When does a Hunter become a Protector?
