Growing up and being very introverted, Rashanna was never the one who wanted to be in the spotlight. So when it came to a time where she had to express personal feelings, she was drawn to writing. Writing has been her outlet for going on seven years now, where she could just let out all her thoughts and feelings, on paper without feeling judged. Every individual needs that sense of security and safety and Rashanna's was writing. But she still feels that the world has not heard all of her yet.
At age 10, Rashanna took to the art of poetry. At the time she didn't know that this form of writing would help her grow creatively and also personally. When it comes to poetry or any creative writing style, and saying how you feel it can open your mind to topics and feelings that were constantly pushed to the side, and never thought of, with her it was her childhood trauma.
Rashanna felt many things as a young girl who experienced trauma at a young age. Rashanna lost both her biological mother and father at a very vulnerable time and age. So, she often thanks herself for finding a creative outlet, to express her emotions rather than going into a negative pathway that could've brought her down some dark paths.
The Black Unicorn: A Daughter from Newark is exploring the inner thoughts of Rashanna, from times during COVID-19 to the present day. Rashanna hopes that young teenage girls and boys will be able to relate to her writings and feel that they are not going through trauma alone. Rashanna's writing is authentic and unique, driven by a lot of passion, where she explores different parts of herself and her mind.
