The lake is not quiet. It is listening.
When Steve Boyle takes his four children to England's Lake District, he expects nothing more than a simple escape from the noise of the world. But on the shores of Wast Water, the air changes. A storm of crows gathers above the lake. Ancient ravens appear through the mist. The water reflects things that should not exist. And beneath the silence, something old begins to wake.
It is called the Quiet.
The Quiet does not attack with claws at first. It does something far worse. It steals sound. It steals memory. It steals meaning. And when it is strong enough, it steals names - erasing people so completely that the world forgets they were ever real.
Chosen by the Staff of Light and bound to a prophecy carried by Odin's ravens, Steve is pulled into a hidden war where silence is alive and true names are the only defence. But the Flame is not his alone. His children awaken relics tied to who they truly are: the Prism Pendant, the Runestone Amulet, the Sun-Gold Bracelet, and the Ember Medallion. Each gift brings power, but every power carries a cost.
Guided north by the crowstorm, the family must journey toward the Mountain of Ancestors, where old bloodlines, buried memories, and forgotten truths wait to be claimed. But the Quiet is learning. It listens for fear. It searches for doubt. And it is already reaching for the children's names.
To survive, Steve and his family must learn the rule that holds the world together: names have power, sound can become light, and love can call someone back from the edge of being forgotten.
The Lake of Beginnings is the first book in The Book of Light and Flame, an upper middle grade fantasy adventure about family, courage, memory, and the power of light against silence. Perfect for readers who love mythic quests, magical relics, ancient prophecies, and stories where ordinary families are called to do impossible things.
