Following the sudden death of her infant son Laurie, Rhea, a young writer, grapples with her grief and devastation, helped by Toby, the attractive young curate from the local church who is in love with her.

Rhea is constantly distracted from her self-absorption by Mavis, the demanding, confused old lady next door, and by Alice, a good-looking, unhappily married young woman who is obsessed with Toby and determined to seduce him. She learns from this stranger a great truth which does much to help her finally to start to live again.
