A market gardener's son from north Wales became the most celebrated British sculptor working in Rome, and in The Biography of John Gibson - Sculptor he tells almost all of it himself.

John Gibson (1790-1866) was born near Conwy and apprenticed to a Liverpool monumental mason, where the historian William Roscoe noticed his ability and opened his library to him. He reached Rome in 1817, was taken up by Antonio Canova, worked in the same city as Bertel Thorvaldsen, and stayed for the rest of his life, producing the Sleeping Shepherd Boy, Psyche and the Zephyrs, the Huskisson and Peel statues, a Queen Victoria for the Houses of Parliament, and the Tinted Venus, whose coloured flesh divided opinion wherever it was shown.
