Turn your lunch over and read the back.
You'd swear there were four things in it. Bread, chicken, a scrape of mayonnaise, something green if you were feeling brave.
There are forty. And that's only the ones the label admits to - several of those forty are boxes with more ingredients hidden inside. Open them all up and the real count runs past a hundred. This book does the arithmetic, and shows its working.
Normal food has become junk food, and only a few have grasped it yet.
Nobody is going to prison over a cheese-and-onion. It's a small, daily, cheerful fib, printed where you will never read it - and once you've spotted it, you find it everywhere.
The fresh fish - frozen twice, flown twenty thousand miles. A broadcaster DNA-tested ten chip shops; three were selling tropical catfish at cod prices.
The premium fresh juice - asleep in a steel tank for the better part of a year, its flavour piped back by a perfume laboratory. The chocolate bars - famous ones, on every shelf, that are no longer legally chocolate. Read the wrapper: milk chocolate flavour coating. The honey - every sample entering an EU survey via the UK was flagged by the lab. Ten out of ten. The gravy on the Sunday roast, with no meat in it at all.None of it is illegal. Almost none of it is even unusual. These are the ordinary, default methods of the mainstream food supply - premium tin and value tin alike.
Which leaves the question that ruins your week. Why is it like this?
Because somebody allowed it - and the food turns out to be the doorway rather than the house.
The meal deal - exempted from the 2025 junk-food crackdown. In writing, in the guidance.
The vet - six corporate groups own most of British veterinary care. Not one of them is a vet. The hosepipe ban - imposed by a company losing a fifth of its own supply, on pain of a 1,000 fine. The organic sticker you pay extra for - a promise nobody verifies, waved through a 200m border post that bills for checks it isn't carrying out. Your premium supplements - nothing is tested before it reaches the shelf. Which? found some at twelve times the safe limit. No leaks. No anonymous sources. No conspiracy - not one. Every fact here is checkable from your kitchen table: company filings, court rulings, Hansard, the regulator's own numbers. That is what makes it worse.
Every child knows how a toll bridge works: there's a troll underneath, and the point is that the troll can be beaten. Go and look under this one. There's nobody there at all - a holding company in Jersey, a pension fund in Vancouver, a state council in Beijing, and a pleasant man who will explain, correctly, that the structure is standard.
They didn't steal anything. They put a toll on it - and money is only the part you see. Some is collected at lunch, in how the healthy option leaves you feeling by three o'clock. Some lands on the doormat, in the dread that comes with a brown envelope. Wallet, body, head: the same booth charges all three.
Big Sandwich is a sweary, sourced, very British investigation that starts in your lunchbox and ends at who owns the country - and it hands you the decoder for both: how to read an ingredients list written not to be read, which number on the shelf edge cannot lie to you, and where the toll is buried in a bill you are not allowed to refuse. With 23 teardown graphics you'll never unsee, and The Toll Test - six laws a government could sign tomorrow, short enough for a postcard to your MP.
You are not the customer in this arrangement.
You are the filling.
Read the ingredients. Read your bills. You're being lied to. Eat real food.
