Knowing the times tables is not optional. It is the foundation of all higher mathematics - fractions, long division, algebra, percentages, and beyond. Students who reach middle school without automatic recall of multiplication and division facts spend enormous mental energy on basic arithmetic, leaving nothing for the actual problem-solving. Students who know their facts instantly can focus entirely on thinking.
The Big Multiplication & Division Drill Book is designed to build that automaticity - systematically, progressively, and with enough variety to keep students engaged through the repetition that mastery requires.
Every times table gets its own dedicated section with five drill formats: in-order practice, paired division facts, scrambled recall, mixed ×/ , and missing factor problems. Every section includes fact families, memory strategies proven to work, and timed drill grids with score-and-time tracking so students can see their progress across repeated attempts.
Inside this drill book:
Part 1 - Individual Times Tables (Sections 1-6)
- Section 1: The ×2 Table - in-order drill, 2 facts, scrambled, mixed × , missing factor, fact families; plus the doubling strategy
- Section 2: The ×3 Table - all five drill formats plus the digit-sum check (digits of ×3 products always sum to 3, 6, or 9)
- Section 3: The ×4 Table - double-the-double strategy (×4 = ×2 then ×2 again)
- Section 4: The ×5 Table - ends-in-0-or-5 pattern; counting by 5s
- Section 5: The ×6 Table - double-the-×3 shortcut
- Section 6: The ×7, ×8, ×9, ×11, and ×12 Tables - the trickiest tables together; includes the 7×8=56 sequence trick (5-6-7-8), the ×8 triple-double method, the ×9 finger trick, and the ×12 distributive shortcut
Part 2 - Mixed Multiplication and Extension (Sections 7-9)
- Section 7: Three 60-fact mixed drills (all tables 2-12) plus a 30-fact Beat the Clock sprint targeting under 2 minutes
- Section 8: Missing factors, multiples, and factor listing - including divisibility rules for 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, and 10
- Section 9: Multiplying larger numbers - distributive property, 2-digit × 1-digit, and 2-digit × 2-digit using partial products
Part 3 - Division Mastery (Sections 10-12)
- Section 10: All division facts 2 through 12 - two 60-fact mixed drill grids, plus dedicated 11 and 12 drills
- Section 11: Division with remainders - 20 calculation problems plus 5 real-life word problems
- Section 12: Long division - 2-digit by 1-digit, 3-digit by 1-digit, and with remainders
Part 4 - Word Problems and the Grand Challenge (Sections 13-14)
- Section 13: 8 Grade 3 word problems and 6 Grade 4 multi-step problems; all require working and a full sentence answer
- Section 14: The 100-Fact Grand Challenge - all operations, all tables, fully timed, plus 6 challenge problems
Every section includes:
- A memory strategy tip proven to work for that table
- Timed drill grids with score AND time boxes (for tracking speed improvement)
- Fact family boxes showing all four related facts
- Multiple drill formats to prevent boredom and reinforce from different angles
Benchmark targets: 40-50 facts per minute by end of Grade 3; 60+ by end of Grade 4.
