Biblical Defenses of Slavery (1864) is a book written by a South Carolinian author that presents arguments in support of slavery as a biblically sanctioned institution. The book is a defense of the practice of slavery in the United States, which was a contentious issue at the time of its publication, as the Civil War was raging. The author argues that slavery is not only morally justifiable, but also necessary, and that the Bible supports this view. The book draws on various passages from the Old and New Testaments to make its case, including the story of Noah's curse on Ham, which was interpreted by some as a justification for enslaving Africans. The author also argues that slavery was a common practice in ancient times, and that it was accepted by many of the biblical patriarchs, including Abraham and Jacob. Additionally, the author contends that the apostle Paul's instructions to slaves and masters in the New Testament demonstrate that slavery was an accepted part of society during the time of Christ.Overall, Biblical Defenses of Slavery (1864) presents a controversial and deeply divisive argument in support of slavery, using religious texts to justify a practice that was widely condemned as immoral and inhumane.Contains Practical Considerations Founded On The Scripture, Relative To The Slave Population Of South Carolina, A Candid Appeal To The Citizens Of The United States, Slavery Defended From Scripture, And Others. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
