In Bhagavad Gita, Viswa Guru Bhagawān Sri Krishna mentions about Vedās and Upanishads on many instants during HIS epic teaching on the philosophy of life. In one of the verses in Sānkhya yoga, HE says, 'those who are obsessed by desires, who look upon heaven as the supreme goal and argue that there is nothing beyond heaven and pleasures and who are devoted to the letter of the Vedās are unwise'.
On a superficial reading of this inscription, a commoner like the author might fall prey to the misunderstanding that 'following the Vedās' needs to be shunned.
In Purushothamaprāpti Yoga, Bhagawān proclaims, 'I am indeed That which has to be known by all the Vedās; I am indeed the author of the Vedānta and the knower of the Vedās am I'. Here, we understand that HE is known through Vedās only.
These two statements about Vedās, when juxtaposed, may leave an ignorant soul with an obscure understanding of the true reality. However, the truth is simple, transparent and not at all that opaque. As an author of Vedās, HE provided the key also, to know the Ultimate Reality in the form of Vedāntās also known as Upanishads. Vedāntās enshrine within themselves the divine face of the Vedic thought, i.e, the doctrine of highest wisdom about Paramātma, the God Almighty as against that portion dedicated to karma kānda or the ritualistic part of Vedās. Those, who are obsessed by desires and who go after the ritualistic practices or worships, never experience tranquility and they remain discontented. So, 'following these ephemeral pursuits in this short and impermanent but precious human life' should be shunned by ignorant souls. This is the absolute truth.
