In 1799, when East India Company scholar Francis Buchanan first recorded the name Rooinga along the misty estuaries of Arakan, he documented an indigenous identity deeply rooted in the fertile soil of the Naf River valley. Spanning over two centuries, Beyond the Naf by Rajuan Ahmed is an epic, multi-generational novel of identity, belonging, cultural heritage, and tragic displacement.
At the heart of the story is the family of Hamid Miah, a devoted farmer who builds his traditional mud house (maitta ghor) and flourishing betel orchards in the village of Shalbagan. Bound by ancestral honor, Hamid instills a deep connection to their motherland in his son, Ismail, who grows up to become a respected primary school teacher. Together, they clear the alluvial plains, cultivate golden rice fields, and erect a proud wooden tottar ghor, standing resilient through changing political eras.
Yet as Burma transitions from British colonial rule to post-war independence, the promise of equal rights quickly unravels. The 1962 military coup triggers decades of systematic exclusion, land confiscation, and state-sponsored violence. When the infamous 1982 Citizenship Law strips the Rohingya of their fundamental rights, it renders millions stateless overnight in the land of their forefathers. Through repeated military clearance operations, Ismail and his son Zahir struggle to defend their home, guided by the sacred final words of their patriarch: Never leave this soil.
As brutal violence engulfs Arakan once more in August 2017, the family faces its ultimate catastrophe. With burning villages reddening the night sky and gunfire echoing along the riverbanks, Zahir must navigate a heart-wrenching choice between his sacred ancestral roots and his family's sheer survival.
