The origins of Freemasonry are commonly explained through a handful of familiar narratives: an Enlightenment society founded in the early eighteenth century, a transformation of medieval craft organisations, or a tradition shaped by influences borrowed from elsewhere. But how securely are these accounts supported by the surviving evidence?
In Beyond the Myths of Freemasonry, David Taillades returns to the documents themselves. Through four complementary essays, he examines the methods by which Masonic history has been constructed, questions accepted datings and classifications, and re-examines medieval terms such as fellow, master mason, mason, and freemason within their original social and institutional contexts.
Drawing upon the Old Charges, manuscripts, ordinances, contracts, guild records, and wills, this study challenges several assumptions long treated as established facts. It explores the possibility that geometry, rather than stoneworking alone, may have stood at the heart of the Masonic tradition; that the boundary between operative and speculative Masonry was far less distinct than later accounts suggest; and that Freemasonry emerged through a gradual interweaving of practical knowledge, intellectual transmission, and fraternity.
For scholars, Freemasons, and readers interested in the early history of the Craft, this book is an invitation to look beyond inherited narratives and return to the sources.
