Between Horizons is a bilingual photographic journey through Afghanistan's central highlands, exploring the provinces of Bamyan, Ghor and Daikundi between 2022 and 2025.
Combining documentary photography with short reflections, the book offers a human-centred perspective on landscapes, communities and everyday life in one of the country's most remote regions. Rather than following a single narrative, it presents a collection of visual observations gathered during extensive travel across the highlands.
The photographs document historic landmarks, mountain landscapes, rural livelihoods, community resilience, seasonal change and the quiet rhythms of daily life. From ancient cultural heritage and remote villages to moments of recovery following natural disasters, the book highlights both the challenges and the enduring strength of the communities who call these landscapes home.
Organised into thematic chapters-including Bamyan, Band-e Amir, Ghor, Daikundi, From Above, Winter, and Impact-the book explores how geography, climate and human connection shape life across Afghanistan's central highlands.
Presented in both English and German, Between Horizons is not intended as a comprehensive account of Afghanistan. Instead, it offers a visual record of presence, observation and quiet reflection, inviting readers to see beyond assumptions and discover a more nuanced perspective of one of the world's least understood regions.
