Betty Zane is a historical novel by Zane Grey, first published in 1903. The story is set in the late 1700s in the Ohio Valley during the American Revolutionary War. The protagonist, Betty Zane, is a young woman who lives in Fort Henry, a small settlement near the Ohio River. When the fort is besieged by British and Native American forces, Betty becomes a hero by sneaking out of the fort to retrieve gunpowder that is desperately needed to defend the fort. Along the way, she encounters danger and romance with a frontiersman named Alfred Clarke. The novel is based on the true story of Betty Zane, who was a real person and is considered a heroine of the American Revolution. The novel is known for its vivid descriptions of frontier life and its portrayal of strong, independent women in a male-dominated society.1903. Using an old note book that had been discovered in some rubbish as the source for his main facts, Grey tells the story of the famous exploit of Elizabeth Zane, which involved her brother's capture by the Indian Princess, of the burning of the Fort, and of her own race for life.
