Berdan's United States Sharpshooters were the Union army's elite marksmen-hand-picked riflemen armed with cutting-edge Sharps rifles and trained to kill at long range. From the Peninsula Campaign through Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Petersburg, and Appomattox, these specialists hunted enemy officers, gunners, and scouts, often fighting in open order far in front of the main Union lines.
Written by Capt. C.A. Stevens, a veteran of the corps, this classic firsthand history follows the 1st and 2nd U.S. Sharpshooters from their creation in 1861 to their mustering out in 1865. Readers get vivid, ground-level accounts of recruiting and marksmanship trials, fieldcraft, sniping tactics, skirmish line work, and the hard realities of life and death in an elite volunteer unit.
