Beneath the waves lie the streets of cities that people once walked.

Off the coast of Egypt, divers have raised temples, colossal statues and the harbour of Thonis-Heracleion - a port Herodotus wrote about, and that nobody could find for sixteen hundred years. In a bay in southern Greece, the streets and house plots of Pavlopetri are still visible in four metres of clear water, laid out five thousand years ago. In Jamaica, a third of Port Royal slid into the harbour in two minutes on a June morning in 1692, and much of it is still down there.
