Belfagor: A Tale is a novella written by Niccol Machiavelli in 1549 and published posthumously in 1840. The story revolves around Belfagor, a demon who is sent to earth by Lucifer to investigate the claim that marriage is a source of misery and torment for men. Belfagor takes on the form of a rich nobleman and marries a beautiful woman named Onesta. However, he soon discovers that married life is not as easy as he had thought, and he is subjected to various trials and tribulations. He is eventually rescued by a group of exorcists, who banish him back to hell. The novella is a satire on the institution of marriage and the social norms of Machiavelli's time. It is also a commentary on the nature of human desire and the consequences of indulging in it. Belfagor: A Tale is considered one of Machiavelli's lesser-known works, but it is still regarded as an important contribution to Italian literature. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
