Belchamber is a novel written by Howard O. Sturgis. The story revolves around a young man named Lord Belchamber who comes from a wealthy and aristocratic family. Despite his privileged upbringing, Belchamber is unhappy and feels trapped in his life. He longs for freedom and the ability to live his life on his own terms. Belchamber's discontentment is further exacerbated by his unrequited love for his friend Lady Barbara. She is engaged to another man, and Belchamber is left to deal with his feelings of jealousy and heartbreak. As the story progresses, Belchamber's desire for a different life leads him to make some questionable decisions. He becomes involved in a scandalous affair with a married woman, which threatens to ruin his reputation and his family's standing in society. Throughout the novel, Sturgis explores themes of class, love, and the limitations of societal expectations. Belchamber's struggles highlight the difficulties faced by those who are born into privilege but long for something more. Overall, Belchamber is a thought-provoking and engaging novel that offers a glimpse into the complexities of life in the upper echelons of society. The memory of his birthday remained with him as a shifting phantasmagoria of painful images that partook of the nature of a nightmare. To be the principal figure in any pageant must always have a charm for the imagination of youth, if combined with the ability to play the part becomingly; but it is a very different matter for one conscious in every nerve of his own. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
