The Beggar's Opera, by John Gay, is a ballad opera first performed in 1728. It is one of the watershed plays in Augustan drama and is generally regarded as the only example of its genre to remain popular today.
The Beggar's Opera satirizes Italian opera and conventional themes such as the triumph of virtue. Though a comedy using highwaymen and prostitutes, it touched on poverty, social inequity, corruption and justice, influencing playwrights such as Brecht.
