The Beast in the Jungle is a novella written by Henry James, first published in 1903. The story follows the life of John Marcher, a man who believes that a great and terrible fate awaits him, but he cannot identify or understand what it is. Marcher meets May Bartram at a social gathering, and they form a close friendship. May becomes Marcher's confidante and companion, and she shares his belief that something significant is going to happen in his life.Over time, Marcher and May's relationship deepens, and they become more and more entwined in each other's lives. However, Marcher's obsession with his impending fate begins to consume him, and he becomes increasingly isolated and distant from May. Despite her efforts to understand and support him, Marcher remains unable to articulate his fears or share his burden with her.As the years pass, Marcher's preoccupation with his fate becomes all-consuming, and he becomes a recluse, living in fear of the unknown. When May falls ill and dies, Marcher realizes too late that she was the one thing that could have saved him from his self-imposed isolation and despair. The Beast in the Jungle is a powerful exploration of the human psyche, and the ways in which our fears and obsessions can consume us. James' prose is elegant and nuanced, and his characters are complex and deeply human. The novella is a poignant reminder of the importance of human connection and the dangers of allowing our fears to control our lives. The great rooms caused so much poetry and history to press upon him that he needed some straying apart to feel in a proper relation with them, though this impulse was not, as happened, like the gloating of some of his companions, to be compared to the movements of a dog sniffing a cupboard. It had an issue promptly enough in a direction that was not to have been calculated. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
