For eighty-two days in the spring of 1945, the small island of Okinawa became the most concentrated killing ground of the Pacific. It was the doorstep of Japan itself, and both sides knew it. The Americans came ashore on Easter Sunday against no resistance at all - because the Japanese Thirty-Second Army was waiting in the fortified hills of the south, dug into caves on the reverse slopes where no bombardment could reach them.
