The Battle Ground is a novel by Ellen Glasgow, first published in 1902. Set in Virginia during the Reconstruction Era, the story follows the lives of two families, the Careys and the Rands, who are divided by their political views and social status. The Careys are wealthy plantation owners who have lost their fortune, while the Rands are poor but politically powerful. The novel explores themes of class, race, and gender, as well as the impact of the Civil War on Southern society. The main character, Major Carely, is a former Confederate officer who struggles to adapt to the changes brought about by Reconstruction. He is torn between his loyalty to his former way of life and his desire to move forward and embrace the new opportunities that are available to him. The novel is a powerful portrait of a society in transition, and a meditation on the nature of change and its impact on individuals and communities.1902.
