The Basset Hound - A Dog Anthology gathers the affectionate, comic and occasionally mournful writing that dog people have always produced about dogs, and sets it alongside period photographs of the breed taken from rare volumes in our library. It is a gift book rather than a manual - made for dipping into.
French in origin and named for its lowness to the ground, the Basset was bred to work hare and rabbit at a walking pace, with a nose that gives nothing away and a voice that carries across a valley. It reached England in the 1860s and has been quietly stealing sofas ever since.
