From a peach basket nailed to a gym balcony to a billion-dollar global sport - this is the complete story of how basketball became basketball.
In the winter of 1891, a frustrated gym teacher in Springfield, Massachusetts had two weeks to invent an indoor game to keep restless students occupied. He never imagined he was building a sport that would one day be played on every continent on Earth.
Basketball traces that improbable journey in vivid, chronological detail - from Naismith's original thirteen rules and the sport's strange caged court era, through the rule changes, rivalries, and barrier-breaking players who transformed a scheduling fix into a global phenomenon.
Inside, you'll discover:
- How a goaltending loophole forced the sport to rewrite its own rulebook - twice
- The stalling crisis that nearly killed professional basketball, and the 24-second shot clock that saved it
- The Cold War controversy that ended America's Olympic dominance in a single disputed game
- How a rival league's flashy gimmick became the modern game's most important shot
- The players and officials who broke basketball's color and gender barriers - on the court, on the sideline, and in the front office
- The full, often-overlooked history of women's basketball, from an 1892 Smith College gymnasium to today's WNBA
- Michael Jordan, the Dream Team, and how basketball became a truly global game
- A dedicated look at the sport's most remarkable players and most successful dynasties of all time
Written for history buffs and basketball fans alike, Basketball also includes a full year-by-year timeline, a glossary of key terms, and a sources section for readers who want to dig even deeper.
Whether you're a lifelong fan or just curious how a two-week gym class experiment turned into the NBA, this is the story of a sport that has never stopped rewriting itself.
