Baralam and Yewasef is a scholarly work by E. A. Wallis Budge that explores the Ethiopic version of a Christianized recension of the legend of the Buddha and the Bodhisattva. The book is a translation of the original Ethiopic text, which was based on a Syriac version of the story that was itself derived from a Middle Persian text. The legend of the Buddha and the Bodhisattva tells the story of two brothers, Barlaam and Josaphat (Yewasef), who were born into a royal family in India. Barlaam, a wise and virtuous man, becomes a Christian monk and sets out to convert his younger brother, Josaphat, to Christianity. However, Josaphat is a devout follower of the Buddha and is hesitant to abandon his faith. The story follows Barlaam's efforts to convince Josaphat of the truth of Christianity, using parables and allegories drawn from both Christian and Buddhist traditions. Along the way, the brothers encounter a variety of obstacles and challenges, including demons, false prophets, and political intrigue.Budge's translation of Baralam and Yewasef provides a fascinating insight into the complex interplay between different religious traditions in the ancient world. The book is a valuable resource for scholars of comparative religion, as well as anyone interested in the history of Christianity and Buddhism.1923. Budge, of the British Museum, is considered to be one of the foremost Egyptologists of the 20th Century. The object of this work is to put into the hands of those who are interested in the spiritual romance of Barlaam and Ioasaph, as it is commonly called, the complete Ethiopic text of the Christianized version of this remarkable work, together with an English translation of the same.
