Excerpt: ... bers of the Church of England as a body, do not deny that there have been eminently holy men, who were not in their communion, yet would they receive any of them, without they conformed to the ceremonies of the church? Would they not at the same time confess, that the differences of opinion and of practice were unessential? Nay farther, would they not maintain, that though the points of difference were not essential, in many respects related to things not even commanded, and were only of consequence as matters of order, or of expediency; yet, th.it standing as they did, on generally approved principles, they ought not to be given up? This is the spirit of the defences of the Establishment, from the days of Hooker to the present time. If we go to the Church of Scotland, we shall find a distinct confession, that although it be a great sin to contemn or neglect this ordinance (baptism), yet grace and salvation are not so inseparably annexed to it, as that no person can be regenerated or saved without it; or, that all that are baptized are undoubtedly regenerated. But how would an application for communion be received from one who was known not to be baptized? The sentiments of lVdobaptists in later times have generally been the same with those of the ancients. And though the authority of the best and greatest men will not justify what is wrong, yet, in the present inquiry, it will not be amiss briefly to shew, that the opinion which Pasdobaptists have in general adopted, is in its principle the same with that which is embraced by the strict Baptists: so that the charge of novelty does not attach to us, when w.e say, that the baptized only, ought to partake of the Lord's supper.
