1730, the Habsburg frontier of Serbia. Investigator Ernst Jerybald is sent to the village of Kisiljevo to file a routine report on a string of unexplained deaths - and finds a village too frightened to bury its own dead. As Ernst follows a trail of Ottoman legal records and a dead priest's journals, he uncovers a centuries-old bureaucracy built to manage something no empire will admit exists. What waits in the ground beneath Kisiljevo does not care which law governs it. By the time Ernst understands what he is truly investigating, the only paperwork left to file may be his own.
