There is a hiss in my right ear.
It has been there for nine years. Not occasionally - every morning, before the coffee, before the day's first sound from any external source, the right ear reports what the left ear lost. A compensatory signal. The brain's response to damage it cannot repair. The audiologist has a name for it. I have a different name for it. I call it the condition that was supposed to end my relationship with music.
It did not end it.
This is the story of how a serious listener - thirty years of high-end audio, three cartridges on a Technics SL-1200GME, an Accuphase integrated amplifier that took a decade to justify and a lifetime to appreciate - learned to hear differently. Not worse. Differently. With the specific attention of someone who knows exactly what the ear has lost and refuses to stop listening anyway.
The Bad Ear Listener is a memoir for anyone who has ever loved music too much to let anything take it away. It is the story of a tinnitus diagnosis that arrived six years late, of an audiologist's booth and a decision about a hearing aid that this book will explain and defend, of a listening room built not despite the hiss but around it - designed to give the brain something richer to attend to than the compensatory signal it generates in the silence.
It is also a book about what serious listening actually is. About the neuroscience of musical engagement and why the damaged ear, trained across decades of devoted attention, hears things the clinical world did not expect it to hear. About cartridges and speakers and the specific alchemy of a system assembled over years by someone who understood, long before the diagnosis arrived, that the equipment was never the point - the music was always the point, and the equipment was simply the most honest path to it.
