Every one of the 50 birds gets two full pages: a large, clear photograph, four numbered field marks to check, and the one bird it is most often mistaken for. No keys to decode, just bird identification a nine-year-old can do from a kitchen window.
Inside this book, young birdwatchers will find:
- 100 real photographs, two of every bird, printed large enough to match against the real bird.
- Four numbered field marks per bird, each one a child can check: the pointed crest, the thick seed-cracking beak, the white wing bar, the tail.
- A Don't mix it up with box on all 50 birds, naming the look-alike and the one feature that separates them. That is where beginners go wrong.
- Bird songs written the way birdwatchers say them, from birdie-birdie-birdie to chick-a-dee-dee-dee, ready to read aloud and recognise outdoors.
- A range map for every bird, showing where it lives and whether it stays all year or only visits for a season.
- An honest how often you'll see it rating, because a book promising a bird nobody can find is no use.
- A tick box on every bird to record the first sighting, with a line for the date and the place.
- A three-page life list, plus a find-a-bird-by-colour page for the days when all a child saw was something red.
The birds are grouped by family rather than alphabetically, so the ones that look alike sit side by side. The two chickadees face each other. So do the Downy and the Hairy Woodpecker, the pair that catches almost every beginner. And where the female looks like a completely different bird, she gets her own photograph.
Written for ages 8 to 12, in plain language a child can read alone or a grown-up can read aloud. A first bird watching book meant to be used outdoors, not shelved.
