The Bacchae of Euripides is a play written by the ancient Greek playwright Euripides. This particular edition of the play was translated into English by Gilbert Murray and was first published in 1920. The play tells the story of the god Dionysus, who returns to Thebes to seek revenge on his family for denying his divinity. He brings with him a group of frenzied female followers, the Bacchae, who worship him and engage in wild, ecstatic rituals. The play explores themes of power, gender, religion, and the dangers of unchecked desire. Murray's translation is considered one of the most influential and enduring versions of the play in the English language. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
