The bacari are historical public houses also known as osterie in other parts of Italy, where you can always enjoy a glass of house wine, in Venice called un'ombra (lit. shadow, to indicate a smaller glass of wine), perhaps accompanied by delicious tidbits, here in Venice called cicchetti. This book will take you on for a tour in the genuine Venice, where the historical inhabitants still live, those who resisted the exodus and gentrification that risks emptying the city of its real people, to become a mere tourist attraction. You will also find some useful tips to navigate the difficulties of a city with a unique physical and social structure in the best possible way.
Some terms used in this guide are quite typical of the surroundings of Venice and, for the most part, don't have a literal translation in English, or in Italian for that matter! We have no alternative but using the venetian dialect but, to facilitate your reading, here below you will find a little description for each of them.
