16-year-old Asher Kant is scared for his life. Almost daily, he is awoken by an excruciating pain in his right forearm. His parents can't explain it, his doctor can't either, and not even the internet has an explanation for the problem. But one day on his walk to school, Asher is approached by a strange man named Bertie who tells Asher not only that he knows he is getting pains in his forearm, but also that he knows why: magic.

Asher starts to walk away when a pair of men materialize out of thin air and attack. Jets of light fly at Asher and Bertie, singeing hair and clothes as they sizzle past, before Bertie is able to grab hold of Asher's arm and everything goes black.

When his sight returns, Asher finds himself deep underground in the headquarters of The Aduits, a secret organization of mages engaged in an ancient struggle with The Passel, which had just tried to abduct him. The Passel want Asher for the same reasons The Aduits sent Bertie to find him: not only has Asher just come of age as a mage, but his mind holds a secret that was stored there when he was just a baby by the dying then-leader of The Aduits, Almasty.

The Passel believe this secret will help them find the four Elemental Cubes that were created millennia ago by The Aduits to store all they knew of Earth, air, fire, and water, and they hope this knowledge will allow them to defeat The Aduits once and for all.

Meanwhile, The Aduits believes they can use the secrets the cubes possess to protect the world from The Passel. Thus, The Aduits must protect Asher and this secret, and Asher must become the mage he was destined to be.
