Alone in her retirement flat on the Dorset coast Victoria, recently widowed, begins to reflect on her life. As she leafs through a book of old paintings she has found in a charity shop Cupid seems to pop up everywhere. Paintings of Dido, the tragic Queen of Carthage, abandoned by her lover Aeneas remind her of a turbulent episode in her youth and her brief love affair on a remote Greek island with Paolo, a mysterious Italian. Her life would never be the same again. The myths and legends and stories about the Greek gods, the ancient beliefs in fate and oracles and in magic related by the maids in her childhood still enthrall her. She is tempted by an advertisement for Carmen, a clairvoyant in her seaside town. She would like to know her future. But before she can move on she seems compelled to resolve some of the mysteries in her past...
