Dieses Buch stellt konkrete Anwendungen mathematischer Modelle und Methoden insbesondere aus den Bereichen Analysis und Stochastik vor. Darunter finden sich Klassiker wie Räuber-Beute-Modelle, die Planung einer optimalen Rundreise oder Random Walks - aber beispielsweise auch Modelle zur Wärmeleitung, zur Potentialtheorie, für spezielle Wellen- und Quantenphänomene, für kernphysikalische Prozesse sowie zur Optimierung von Produktionsprozessen in der Biotechnologie. Ein gro er Raum wird auch Phänomenen wie Entropie, Zufall und Chaos eingeräumt.
Jede Anwendung wird zunächst thematisch eingeordnet; dabei wird auf die mathematischen Grundlagen verwiesen, die zum Verständnis benötigt werden. Zudem wird das Anwendungsgebiet (Physik, Technik, Wirtschaft, Biologie etc.) sowie der jeweilige Schwierigkeitsgrad (Einsteiger, Fortgeschrittener, Profi) angegeben. Für die teils aufwändigen Berechnungen und Simulationen werden die Softwaretools MATLAB und Mathematica eingesetzt; die entsprechenden Programmcodes werden online bereitgestellt. Jede Anwendung enthält abschlie end einen Abschnitt mit Übungsaufgaben, mit denen die Inhalte des Kapitels vertieft und weitergedacht werden können. Zu allen Aufgaben werden ausführlich durchgerechnete Lösungen bereitgestellt.
