Written entirely in Haitian Creole, An n al Lazil is a poetic journey shaped by love, memory, exile, and the landscapes of Haiti.Lazil is the poet's maternal homeland, a place he remembers through the language and images of childhood. Fred Lafortune returns throughout the book to a simple invitation addressed to a beloved who is no longer alive: an n al Lazil-let's go to Lazil. The invitation reaches across her absence. He wants to take her home, to walk with her through a place that remains vivid in his memory.
Lazil comes alive through rivers, mountains, trees, food, music, childhood games, and the people who inhabit its roads and neighborhoods. Rara processions and drums enter the poems alongside Vodou imagery, Christian references, traditional remedies, and the rhythms of everyday Haitian life. The familiar often slips into dream, and the landscape takes on a life of its own.Love remains close to the surface, even as the speaker confronts loss. Distance also separates him from Lazil, turning home into something carried in memory. At times, the beloved and the homeland seem almost to inhabit the same imaginative space, both reached through remembrance and the possibilities of poetry. In An n al Lazil, Haitian Creole becomes a language of return, carrying the poet toward what remains with him despite death and distance. An n al Lazil received the Grand Prix Dominique Batraville.
