Forced to leave her job as a teacher due to ill health, Sue Bailey finds herself caught up in the machinations of the welfare state, made to feel as if her life is worth less than those who, 'do the right thing' and contribute to society through their work. This emotion only intensifies following the election of the Republican Party. Rising quickly through the ranks of the Republican Party is Andrew Proust and his aid Nigel Purser. Naïve and malleable, the affable politician has been groomed for greatness by Purser without his knowledge, in fact there is a lot Proust doesn't know about his friend. Purser works for a secret organisation that is in fact the power behind the government, not just in the UK, but around the globe. These faceless individuals manufacture the financial crisis of 2010, putting in motion a project that would ultimately lead to the breakdown of society. Penalised and belittled through the Republican's welfare legislation, Sue can only look on in horror as the tendrils of this secret society destroy everything that is familiar in her world with catastrophic results. This novel is a work of fiction within which factual events are explored. Sue's journey is my own. This is a work of social commentary wrapped up in a political thriller.
