In his early 20s, Richard's older brother John was struck down by a speeding car, snuffing out a life on its way to either being good or bad or probably neither. The police never figured out who was driving that late model 60s Chevy ripping around the corner. The neighborhood people blamed everyone they didn't like and sought to square that emptiness with blood. The truth was probably closer to some speeder cutting through the block below Mack on the way to some other place, forcing himself into the air of that moment, when a man was crossing the street and, while hunched over in the middle of Kercheval retrieving the newspaper that he had tucked loosely under his arm, but fallen from that half-grip, where he had swooped to retrieve it in one motion, and was struck. It's possible that the driver thought he hit a dog.
