Despite feelings of shame and rejection from never knowing a father's love or even his name, Larry Taylor led a heroic and honorable life. After helplessly standing by while his young son and two beloved wives died from cancer, he came to believe that for him to marry again would unleash a curse of cancer on yet another loved one.Instead, Larry decided to woo Diana, his friend of many years whom he admired and desired to love and care for but not marry. Their journey together caused Larry to face his worst fears and feelings of inadequacy as a love story unfolded that only God could author. Armed with courage, Larry was able to persevere and unexpectedly discover that his true Father was ready to shower him with His expansive and very personal love.
As for Diana, her life had been marred by betrayal, abuse, and abandonment; leaving her divorced with a ten-month-old and two-year-old. A single mother, she could rely only on the promises of God as she pursued her education and also struggled with lymphoma at age 33. Her younger son's physical and emotional disabilities and suicide at age 20 was the finale of her long, difficult journey to the very heart of a loving God who had seemed so distant. When Larry presented his plan, she was deeply committed to a healing-retreat ministry which she supported with her law practice and was definitely not ready to change course for a romantic relationship that didn't include marriage.
Our culture wars have most men perplexed and asking, What do women really want? In Larry, a most successful career woman - the strong heroine of a life steeped in tragedy - found what she most deeply desired; a desire common throughout history but forgotten by many women today.
