Zwei Schwerpunkte werden miteinander kombiniert: Zum einen geht es um die Theorie fundamentaler algebraischer Objekte wie z. B. Gruppen, Ringe und Körper, also von Begriffsbildungen, die weit über die Algebra hinaus in der Mathematik von Bedeutung sind. Den zweiten Schwerpunkt bildet die Galois-Theorie mit ihren Anwendungen. Ausgangspunkt dieser Theorie ist das Problem der Auflösung algebraischer Gleichungen, ein Problem, das nach mannigfachen vergeblichen Versuchen zum Auffinden von Lösungsformeln für Gleichungen höheren Grades seine umfassende Klärung durch die brillanten Ideen von E. Galois fand.
In der vorliegenden Neuauflage wurde unter dem Aspekt Lernkontrolle und Prüfungsvorbereitung erstmals eine textbegleitende Anleitung zur eigenständigen Überprüfung des Lernerfolgs und zur Einstimmung auf Prüfungssituationen realisiert. Nicht zuletzt im Hinblick auf diese Neuerung wurde der gesamte Text optimiert und nochmals einer gründlichen Revision unterzogen.
