Can the Scholar-Martyr Tradition of Twelver Shi'ism be understood as continuing into the modern age?
This book explores that question through a comparative historical and jurisprudential study of the Five Martyrs of Twelver Shi'ism and the life of Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei.
Beginning with the Qur'anic concept of martyrdom and its development within Shi'i thought, the study examines the lives and legacies of Shaheed-e-Awwal, Shaheed-e-Sani, Shaheed-e-Salis, Shaheed-e-Rabi, and Shaheed-e-Khamis. It identifies the defining characteristics that united these eminent scholar-martyrs: recognised juristic authority, intellectual originality, guardianship of the faith, steadfastness under persecution, and ultimate sacrifice.
Using this historical framework, the book presents a comparative analysis of Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei's scholarly formation, religious leadership, institutional stewardship, intellectual contributions, and martyrdom. It argues that the title Shaheed-e-Sadis (The Sixth Martyr) is best understood as the continuation of an established scholarly tradition rather than the creation of a new one.
Drawing upon Qur'anic teachings, classical Shi'i sources, historical scholarship, and jurisprudential analysis, this work offers a fresh perspective on the relationship between knowledge, leadership, and sacrifice in Twelver Shi'i history.
