Four-year-old Viktor is brought to America to live with an aunt and uncle in the affluence of Hollywood, California. Hans, the eldest, at eight, is sent to a Catholic orphanage in Augsburg, Germany and a life of austerity until he is adopted by an Austrian family five years later. Though Hans tries to keep in contact with Viktor, the miles, years, and an uncle who wants Viktor to forget his past prove too much for them. The story is complicated by politics, war, and murder; their love and loyalty tested after they finally reunite on opposite sides.
