The book, written by Earl L. W. Heck, chronicles Herrman's life from his early years in Europe to his arrival in Virginia where he became involved in the tobacco trade. Herrman's career as a merchant in New Amsterdam (now New York City) is also explored in detail, including his work as a cartographer and his role in the Dutch West India Company. The book also examines Herrman's move to Maryland, where he eventually became the first Lord of Bohemia Manor, a vast estate that he developed and managed. Throughout the book, Heck provides insights into the political and economic climate of early America, and the challenges and opportunities that Herrman faced as a businessman and landowner.
