In The Ascent of Man, Henry Drummond advances an interpretation of evolution that extends beyond biological processes to encompass ethical and social progress. Writing in the aftermath of Darwinian debate, Drummond proposes that natural selection alone is insufficient to account for the development of higher forms of life, and introduces the complementary principle of what he terms the struggle for the life of others. Through this formulation, he attempts to situate altruism, cooperation, and moral consciousness within an evolutionary framework.
The work proceeds through a series of essays that examine the implications of evolutionary theory for human society, religion, and the understanding of progress. Drummond's argument reflects the intellectual climate of the late Victorian period, in which scientific discovery and theological interpretation were frequently brought into dialogue.
