Aryabhata-I (476-550 AD) occupies an envious position in the Indian astronomy and mathematics. In view of his important contributions, some of these for the first time in the world, Aryabhata-I has been rightly regarded as the father of astronomy and mathematics in India. His major works include the 'Aryabhatiya' and the'Arya-Siddhanta', out of which, the 'Aryabhatiya' is more famous and is relevant even today. Aryabhatiya consists of 108 verses in addition to 13 introductory verses, which are divided into four pādas or chapters. India's first satellite 'Aryabhata' was named in his honour. Aryabhata-I is known in the world for his outstanding contributions, which include: (i) the value of Pi (= 3.1416) which was very close to its actual value; (ii) proposal that the earth rotates on its axis and orbits around the Sun; (iii) explanation of eclipses through shadows; (iv) calculation of the earth's circumference and sidereal year with high accuracy; (v) utilization of zero as a place-holder and development of an innovative alphabetical numeral system for large numbers; (vi) introduction of sine tables; and(vii) quadratic equations and algebraic solutions. Needless to say that Aryabhata-I was a visionary who thought much ahead of time, This book by me (as a proud Indian author) is a tribute to this worthy son of the soil. The book consists of 3 Sections and 7 Chapters.
