The Art Imperative: The Secret Power of Art by Phillip Romero, MD, argues for the crucial role of art in human evolution and individual development, proposing the concept of Creative Intelligence as essential for survival and well-being.Romero, a family/child psychiatrist and practicing artist, integrates science and humanities to explain how creativity acts as a protective force against painful pasts and an inspirer of better futures. He defines Creative Intelligence as the effortful attention of the individual 'mind' to recruit both these attributes to change oneself, to evolve social systems, and to sustain the environment to improve quality of life.
The book emphasizes that Creative Intelligence is an ongoing mind-body process involving remembering, reflecting, reframing, reimagining, reinventing, and reconnecting with oneself and the world.Part I: Art and Stress tracks the developmental psychobiology of individuals' use of creativity to meet the challenges of life.Part II: Art and Resilience explores how the 'secret power' of art shapes culture to evolve beyond stagnant and chaotic periods of cultural breakdown. Ultimately, The Art Imperative presents a groundbreaking perspective from a psychiatrist and artist, asserting that creativity is not merely an aesthetic pursuit but a fundamental imperative for human resilience, growth, and survival.
