Why is it titled The Art and Alchemy of Sketch Comedy Writing? Well, two reasons. The first is that comedy is an art. It's subjective. It reflects the world and the world reflects it. The alchemy part is from the idea that comedy (and other arts) is transformative. I believe that comedy can change people. I believe that once you are able to laugh about something, you are able to talk about it. I am a big believer in the healing power of comedy. And that's alchemical to me. It may sound like a bunch of hokum to you and that's fine. I won't judge you... publicly.
We'll start with theory and build from there. Every chapter builds on the concepts of the previous chapter. Each exercise is designed to add a comedy tools to your comedy skill set. If you go through the whole thing in order and do every exercise, well, you should have learned something. Hopefully it's something about writing sketch comedy.
In other words if you finish the book and you aren't better at improv and you didn't find your comic voice, don't come whining to me.
