He was a man of contradictions: a shepherd's son who became a prince of the church, a priest who became a revolutionary leader, and an anti-colonial hero who became the first president of a nation born from compromise. This sweeping biography chronicles the extraordinary life of Archbishop Makarios III, a figure whose personal journey is inseparable from the turbulent history of Cyprus in the twentieth century. From a poor mountain village, he rose through the ranks of the Orthodox Church to become the charismatic and unyielding voice of his people's struggle for freedom.
As the champion of Enosis-union with Greece-Makarios challenged the might of the British Empire, becoming the political face of the EOKA guerrilla campaign that raged across the island. His defiance led to his exile in the remote Seychelles, a move that only amplified his status, transforming him into a global icon of anti-colonial resistance. He returned not with the long-sought union, but as the first president of a complex and fragile independent republic, a state whose intricate constitution was fraught with the seeds of future conflict.
Governing the new nation proved a monumental task. As president, Makarios navigated the treacherous waters of a bi-communal state, where growing mistrust between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities led to political paralysis and eventually the Bloody Christmas violence of 1963. While his island fractured, he carved out a significant role on the world stage, steering Cyprus into the Non-Aligned Movement and becoming a respected statesman whose clerical robes were a familiar sight in international capitals, often to the frustration of Western powers.
The final, tragic act of his story was set in motion by a bitter rift with the military junta in Athens. Facing internal terror from the extremist EOKA B, a 1974 coup d'état attempted to assassinate him, forcing a dramatic escape. His defiant address to the United Nations came too late to halt the subsequent Turkish invasion that permanently partitioned his homeland. Returning to a divided island, Makarios dedicated his final years to rebuilding a shattered republic, leaving behind a legacy as complex and contested as Cyprus itself-revered as the father of the nation by many, but reviled as the author of their misfortunes by others.
