This book offers an analytical study of hidden apartheid in Sudan, presenting it as a historical, political, and social structure that has helped produce exclusion, discrimination, and inequality between the centre and the peripheries, and between ruling elites and the wider society. It begins with a central question: how did Sudan, despite its cultural and ethnic diversity, become a political space that repeatedly reproduced domination, deprivation, and national fragmentation?
The book adopts a comparative approach, linking the Sudanese case to African experiences such as South Africa and Zanzibar, in order to examine the relationship between state power, identity, legitimacy, and political violence. It also explores the impact of colonial and post-colonial rule on institutions, power distribution, and citizenship, showing how the state was often used to reproduce privilege rather than build an inclusive social contract.
Rather than offering only a historical account, the book examines the deeper structure of Sudan's crisis: the crisis of the state, identity, justice, and political centralization. It also raises key questions about national reconciliation, transitional justice, and rebuilding the state on more inclusive and equitable foundations. This book will appeal to readers interested in Sudanese affairs, African studies, authoritarian systems, civil conflict, political transformation, and historical justice.
